The Pink Power Dunk is a school fundraiser created to help a staff member who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. To raise money, students donate to see their favorite teachers dunked into ice cold water. The dunk was held Friday, January 6 during Paws for Fun.

“I think it’s really cool that we are doing this fundraiser,” sixth grader Samantha R. said. “It was cool to give the envelope to the custodian that has breast cancer. I think it’s unique that they are dunking teachers, and I also thought it was cool that they are fundraising for cancer.”

Custodian Martina Ortiz De Negrete was given a check for $2,000 to pay for costs related to her cancer treatment.

“This is a good fundraiser because it’s supporting a good cause,” sixth grader Sheridan A. said. “My grandma had breast cancer and I’m happy to see people donating to the cause. It’s a good fundraiser because lots of people are encouraging it since they want to see their teachers get dunked.”

Sheridan shares which teacher she’s excited to watch get drenched in ice cold water.

“I want to see [math teacher Robyn] Christensen get dunked because she has big curly hair and I want to see what it looks like.”

Math teacher Jayne Alver explains why she signed up to participate.

“I signed up to do this because I wanted to help someone else,” Alver said. “I’m a little nervous about it being January, but I’m happy it’s for a good cause. I’m really excited to see Kagan get dunked. I wish he could hold a rubber duck as he gets dunked.”

Alver shares why she isn’t worried about being embarrassed.

“In front of one person, in front of the whole school, it doesn’t matter,” Alver said. “I just wanted to help someone else.”
